10/30/2003

A new national anti-drug media campaign is aimed at keeping Hispanic youth away from drugs, the Rocky Mountain Gazette reported Oct. 29.

The campaign features an open letter that encourages parents to talk with their children about the dangers of marijuana and other illegal drugs. The

letter will run in 84 newspapers in 43 metropolitan areas throughout the country.

In addition, the campaign includes three television ads that will run in Hispanic markets. A bilingual booklet will also be distributed. The booklets can be obtained by calling the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information at 800-788-2800 for English, or 877-SIN-DROGAS in Spanish.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hispanic >teens have the nation's highest rate of marijuana use.

A portion of the campaign, $31 million, is being paid for through the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The remainder of the support is being provided through public and private organizations.
